CPSIA Family Dollar SLASHES & DESTROYS little girl SHOES! NBC 25 Hagerstown MD 4-9-09

NBC 25 Investigates Suspicious Product Removal at Family Dollar Reported by: Mary King Thursday, Apr 9, 2009 @06:56pm EST HAGERSTOWN, MD – What would you do if you saw several pairs of children’s shoes taken off the shelf and destroyed while you were shopping? One NBC 25 viewer says he saw it happen at a local dollar store, and called us to investigate. William Wagonhoffer says he didn’t understand why dozens of shoes were being destroyed instead of donated in these tough economic times. Workers at Family Dollar say they’re following new lead regulations. Rick Adams of the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce said, “So while they’re may be no lead in the product because we don’t have a testing report on the product, we don’t feel comfortable selling it to our customer or donating it for that matter because ultimately it could be an unsafe product. So better safe than sorry.” The Consumer Products Safety Improvement Act went into effect February of this year, but will not be enforced until 2010.
